Jan Rivera holds a B.M. as well as an A.A. in Electric Guitar Performance from Musicians Institute, Hollywood CA; where he studied as a multi scholarship recipient, and worked as a Teaching Assistant.
During his time in Los Angeles, Jan studied with Alex Machacek, Greg Howe, Antti Kotikoski, Jeff Richman, Chris Juergensen and Scott Henderson.
Aside from his studies at M.I., Jan holds a B.M. in Music Education and a B.A. in Music from the Universidad Interamericana of Puerto Rico, San German Campus.
While in Puerto Rico, Jan was also featured as a presenter at the Puerto Rican Congress of Investigation in Education, and worked as a Music Theory and
Musical Rudiments tutor at the Universidad Interamericana of Puerto Rico.
His book "Advanced Rhythmic Concepts for Guitar; Foreword by Alex Machacek: (An in-depth study on Metric Modulation, Polyrhythms and Polymeters)" is available through Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com among others.
Since it's publication, the book has reached the 2014 Abstract Logix top sellers list, and placed #1 in its category for best sellers at Amazon.com. It has also received raving reviews by publications the likes of JazzTimes Magazine, Vintage Guitar Magazine, fellow authors, educators and musicians.
As of February 2016, the book's site and the metric modulation calculator featured in it, have been cited as resources for the Drums and Percussion Composition course; taught to third year students of the
Bachelor of Applied Music program at Vancouver Community College.
On October of 2016, Jan was selected for the "Best Guitar Teachers in San Diego 2016" list by Expertise.com
